Debunking Common Myths And Truths About Frequent Flyer Miles

April 4, 2017

Frequent Flyer Miles

Misconceptions about frequent flyer miles often keep travelers from using frequent flyer miles to their utmost potential. I am here to set the record straight about all the myths and truths about frequent flyer miles and credit card points, so our readers can take advantage of all that the frequent flyer miles have to offer. Personally, I have traveled the world by using my frequent flyer miles and took trips that I could never have thought possible otherwise. Below are some common frequent flyer myths that I am demystifying so you, too, can travel more while spending less.

1. You Can Only Get Frequent Flyer Miles When You Fly

Obviously the name frequent flyer miles is slightly misleading because you don’t have to travel frequently just to earn airline miles. That would be ludicrous and slightly overwhelming. It is probably the number one reason people don’t take the opportunity to invest themselves into frequent flyer programs and take advantage of the wonderful opportunities it provides.

In just the last two years alone, I have collected around one million frequent flyer miles and I did not have to travel a lot to earn them. How did I earn such a massive number of miles? Well, there are ways and I am about to enlighten you.

I earned a lot of my miles through various credit card promotions and sign up bonuses. Using my credit card also extends the expiration date of my miles, which is definitely a plus. As long as you’re spending in the air or on the ground, you can collect frequent flyer miles.

2. Miles Expire Quickly

This is also a myth and it doesn’t hold any truth to it. Some of you will be happy to know that a lot of airlines miles don’t even expire anymore. The same goes for the miles collected through credit card, as long as your account is still active your miles are still valid. Also, numerous airlines will reset the expiration clock if you make even a $1 purchase from their partner online merchants like iTunes. Please be mindful that your frequent flyer miles are an asset and all it takes is minimal effort to keep the accounts active.

3. Airlines Lack Good Deals

I beg to differ. Last year alone credit companies shelled out massive credit card sign up bonuses, and 2023 promises even better deals. Airlines have been competing for a neck to neck to maintain loyal clientele, and they do so by providing exciting deals.

4. This Is Too Good To Be True

Even though it is hard for a lot of people to believe in free travel, it is a fact that you can travel the world in almost next to nothing if you have a clever plan to take advantage of frequent flyer miles. Billions of frequent flyer miles are sold to partners like credit card companies, online merchants, hotels, and cart rentals. Frequent flyer miles are ideal marketing tools because the airlines know that their passengers are motivated by them. All you have to do is start paying attention to where you’re spending the money and start collecting those frequent flyer miles.
