Everything To Know About Marriott Rewards Program

September 10, 2018

Marriott Rewards Program

Marriott Rewards had a very humble beginning when it first started in 1983 as the Marriott Honored Guest Awards. Since then the award program has seen a lot of changes, including a new name, Marriott Rewards. This hotel reward program is the oldest hotel award program that has operated continuously and is still operating today. Since it started, the hotel reward program has gained over 54 million members thus making it the world’s second largest hotel loyalty program, coming in second to IHG Rewards Club (which has 92 million members). With that being said, Marriott Rewards loyalty members have access to more hotel rooms across the world. The number of loyalty members proves how well loved the program really is, and members spread the love and sell Marriott rewards to make extra money and help other members reach their goal.

1. Changes Made To The Program Recently

Marriott-Rewards-Program

The Marriott Reward Program has gone through a facelift in the last couple of years, which includes some amazing new benefits for Marriott Rewards elite members. Some of these perks include guaranteed late checkout, an elite concierge, exclusive members-only prices, and the access to Experiences Marketplace for both Marriott Rewards and Ritz Carlton loyalty members.

These new benefits came into light after the merger signaled the start of the merger between Starwood Preferred Guest and Marriott Rewards. Some of you out there might not be aware of the fact that Marriott Rewards won the race to buy Starwood Preferred Guest earlier this year, and this merger was received with excitement and joy. The merger does not mean that the two loyalty programs have merged into one. Marriott Rewards was quick to reassure its members that both programs will run independently until sometime this year. There have been hints that they are actively designing bridges (no, not literal ones) that will link the two programs.

Since the initial announcement both Starwood Preferred Guest and Marriott Rewards program are now running in tandem, which now gives members the ability to link accounts, points transfer, instant status matches, and lastly also mutual earning agreements in place co-branded credit card holders.

The union of two beloved hotel loyalty programs was well received in the world of travel because it made points for both programs much easier. Both programs saw an influx of more traffic and usage of points. Loyalty members were earning points so quickly, and easily that some were ready to sell Marriott Rewards as well. Why? No, the selling of the hotel points doesn’t shine any negative light on the program or its points, it’s actually the opposite. Some loyalty members have points to spare, while others are in dire need of Marriott Rewards program which makes it a win, win situation for both parties involved.

2. Marriott Rewards Membership Tiers and Elite Status

This hotel loyalty program is divided into four tiers which have been listed below with key benefits highlighted in each tier.

Member:

A member who is just starting out by signing to Marriott Rewards program will get free WiFi and an access to Marriott Rewards Member Rates. This may sound like nothing when compared to the perks of the other tiers, but it’s important to realize this is tier is just a stepping stone.

Silver Elite:

In order to jump to this level, ten or more night stay is required. The Silver Elite will give the members to earn a 20% bonus on points for cash/credit stays, priority late check-out (this is not guaranteed, but is still a great option), the fifth night is free via reward redemption and much more.

Gold Elite:

You need to work in order to get to this tier because it requires 50 nights or more, which may not sound very easy (or doable) but this tier is worth the hard work. One of the most beloved Gold Elite perks is the lounge access and complimentary breakfast for two. Some of the other popular perks include guaranteed late check-out, 25% bonus on points for cash/credit card stays, faster internet service, and Hertz #1 Gold Membership.

Platinum Elite:

Brace yourselves because only the worthy can reach this tier. If you thought 50 nights was a lot, then you’ll either cringe at the 75 nights stay or take it as a challenge. If you love traveling, then this will be (fairly) easy. Members of the Platinum Elite tier enjoy perks of Member, Silver Elite, and Gold Elite. However, the added bonus is that they get a 50% bonus on points, an exclusive gift on arrival, 48-hour availability, and Reward Plus: which is a Complimentary MileagePlus® Premier Silver status with mutual perks on United Airlines.

It is worth noting out that the merger of Starwood Preferred Guest and Marriott Rewards has made it easier for members to jump tiers. There are numerous ways to achieve elite status through different co-branded credit cards.

3. Why Members Enjoy Selling Marriott Reward Points

A lot of people out there must be thinking if it’s so hard for members to earn a new level in the reward system, why would they ever want to sell Marriott Reward points? The answer to this is relatively easy; just imagine the number of points earned by a Platinum Elite and a Gold Elite. They have more than enough to spare (25% to 50% bonus remember?), and they would much rather sell Marriott Reward points and make some extra cash on the side.
