Five Common Myths About Selling Airline Miles

August 18, 2017

frequent flyer miles

There are so many myths about buying and selling airline miles. We’re here to expose myths about selling airline miles. You’ll be surprised to see the number of misconceptions out there regarding selling miles. There is a possibility that you might find yourself selling your frequent flyer miles by the end of this article.

1. Selling airline miles is not safe

This myth couldn’t be further than the truth. Selling and buying airline miles is part of an established industry. Mileage brokers who run these companies are highly motivated individuals who are trained in the art of using complete transparency while selling your airline miles.

When the deal is finalized, the seller transfers the airline miles into the given account and is later paid for them within hours. If you hire the services of a reputable mileage broker rest assured you will not be scammed. Those who are worried about personal information getting in the hands of a third party have nothing to fear, because the clauses in the privacy policy ensure that the information you provide is safe.

2. Selling miles is against the law

This is probably the biggest myth that currently exists about selling airline miles. We’re here to tell you that selling miles is not against the law anywhere except Utah. Airlines do frown upon those passengers who sell miles, but no serious action is taken against them.

3. Frequent flyer miles are a gimmick

Airline loyalty programs are not a gimmick. Yes, they do play a big role in tempting someone to travel, but these miles genuinely help people get huge discounts on their ticket. Earning and buying miles specifically for a cheap business class ticket is all the rage these days. Airline miles have ignited a passion for travelling, and especially traveling in luxury without breaking the bank. Frequent flyer miles are a valuable commodity now and their price and value depend on their loyalty program.

4. Miles are worthless

Airline partners such as credit card companies, hotels, restaurants and shopping portals originally buy airline miles directly from the airlines themselves. So if they’re buying miles from the airlines so that people have a reason to take part in their deals, people have the right to sell them as well. Don’t you think? If these big companies can make money from airline miles why can’t we? Miles are not worthless, and people have the full liberty to sell or transfer them to whomever they desire.

5. All frequent flyer miles have the same value

To put it simply, frequent flyer miles are like currency. Just like all the other currencies in the world, there are some airline miles which have more value than others. If you’re offered $1,000 dollars or 1,000 Japanese Yen, you automatically know which is more valuable. The same theory applies to airline miles. 50,000 American Airlines miles and 50,000 United miles don’t have to add up to the same amount. This is because every airline has its own set of rules and its own value, which is taken into consideration.
